A Triple Hundred (300) In Test Cricket is like a bowler taking 8 wickets in an innings in Test Cricket. It is one of the rarest achievements that a batter can score in Test Cricket. Only a select few have hit a triple century in Test Cricket. And out of these there is one of the most exclusive clubs for batters which is the ones who have hit 2 Triple Hundreds in their Test Career. This is something that only 4 batters have ever done in their careers. To think about that in the 147 year history of Test Cricket only 4 batters have hit 2 Triple Hundreds. Those batters are Don Bradman of Australia, Brian Lara and Chris Gayle of West Indies and Virender Sehwag of India.

Brian Lara


Out of all these 4 men , Brian Lara is special because he has 2 of the 3 highest scores in the history of Test Cricket. He hit daddy Triple Hundreds because no one could get him out when he is in full flow. Let’s look at his 2 Triple Hundreds. He made 11953 runs from 131 Matches.



  • He hit his first Triple Century in the year 1994 in a Test Match against England. It was on 16th April 1994 that this Test match was played. Brian Lara batted for 538 balls and he hit 45 fours in this innings meaning 180 runs in boundaries. He had a strike rate of 70 in this innings. Brian Lara held the record for the highest score in Test Cricket for close to a decade. This was the arrival of a future all time great.


  • His second score of over 300 was actually 400 not out which after 20 years is still the highest individual Test Score of all time. This Test match was also against England and was played on 10th April 2004. He played for 582 balls in this innings and he smashed the England bowlers all over the ground. He hit 43 fours and 4 sixes in this innings meaning 196 runs were scored in boundaries. He had a Strike rate of 68.73. It looks unlikely that this record will be broken anytime soon

 

Chris Gayle


Chris Gayle was the last great West Indies batter to have played Test Cricket and one of the last to have played 100 Test Matches. He also hit 2 Triple Hundreds In Test Cricket. He scored 7214 runs and out of these more than 600 were made in just 2 innings. Let’s take a look at his 2 Triple Hundreds.



  • His first Triple Century was in the year 2005 and it was in a Test Match against South Africa. It was held on 29th April 2005. West Indies were batting after a strong South Africa batting performance and Chris Gayle www up to the task. He destroyed the South African bowling as he made 317 runs from 483 balls and he hit 37 fours and 3 sixes in this innings meaning 166 runs were made in boundaries. He had a strike rate of 65.63.


  • The second Triple Hundred in the Test Career of Chris Gayle was made in 2010 in a Test Match against Sri Lanka on 15th November 2010. West Indies were Batting first and he was in attack mode as only in 437 balls he hit 333 runs at a great strike rate of 76.20. He smashed 34 fours and 9 sixes meaning 190 Runs were made in boundaries. This put Chris Gayle in this exclusive club

 

Virender Sehwag


Virender Sehwag is only one of 2 batters from India to have hit a triple century and the only from India to have hit 2 Triple Hundreds. He is also only 1 of 2 batters in the history of Test Cricket to have hit 2 Triple Hundreds and a 290+ and came so close to hitting a 3rd. He made 8586 runs in 104 Test Matches. Let’s take a look at both his Triple Hundreds.



  • The First Triple Century for Virender Sehwag came in 2004 against Pakistan in Multan. This test match was played on 28th March 2004. India were batting first and Sehwag was in his element. He absolutely decimated the great Pakistani bowling attack. He hit 309 runs in 375 balls at a strike rate of 82.40. He hit 39 fours and 6 sixes in this innings meaning 192 runs were made in boundaries alone. He made history that day and he got to his 300 with a six


  • This is perhaps one of the rarest instances that a Triple Hundred was hit at a strike rate of more than 100. Virender Sehwag created a record when he hit the triple hundred in 278 balls. This was a Test Match against South Africa in 2008 on 26th March. India were replying an amazing South Africa innings. Virender Sehwag was determined to give India an even bigger score. He hit 319 runs in 304 balls at a strike rate of 105. He smashed 42 fours and 5 sixes in this innings meaning 198 runs in boundaries.


Don Bradman


Last but certainly not the least the OG to do it all has to be talked about. Don Bradman was the first to hit 2 Triple Hundreds in Test Cricket. He was also the first to have hit a 290+ score as well. He has made 6996 runs from just 52 Test Matches. He has an average of 99.96 in Test Cricket. Let’s look at both his Triple Hundreds



  • The first Triple Century that Don Bradman hit was in the year 1930 and it was against England. The match was on 11th July 1930 and Australia were batting first. Don Bradman hit 334 runs from 449 Balls and he had a strike rate of 74.39 in this innings. He hit 46 fours in this innings and he proved that he was the best in the world.


  • It was just 4 years after that in 1934 , Don Bradman hit his second Triple Hundred. However just a few innings before he was not out at 299 thus was just 1 run from making history. This test match was also against England on 20th July 1934. He played 473 balls in this innings for his 304 runs at a strike rate of 64.27. He hit 43 fours and 2 sixes in this innings meaning 184 runs in boundaries. Don Bradman was the best ever.
