Neeraj Chopra has taken India's pride to another level. Though he is young, the Indian javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra broke all the records by becoming the first and only track and field athlete from the country to win an Olympic medal – that too a gold at a very young age.

 

For the first time India has won a gold medal in javelin throw at the Olympics. In 2008, Abhinav Bindra won India's first individual gold medal in shooting. After which Neeraj Chopra has become the second Indian to win an individual gold medal in javelin throw for the second time today.

 

With this Neeraj Chopra became the Indian who won not only the gold medal in the Olympic Games after 13 years but also the first Indian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal for India in the track and field event. India won its first medal in athletics 121 years ago today.

 

Neeraj Chopra has not only shown a great performance during the Olympics but he broke his own national record at the Paavo Nurmi Games 2022 with his best throw being 89.30m. He also won the gold medal by throwing 86.69 meters of javelin in the ongoing Kuarton Games in Finland in June 2022. He is now the first Indian to win Lausanne Diamond League.

Interesting Facts about Neeraj Chopra´s Sports Journey

 

  • Neeraj was fat as a child. His family got him a gym membership and he got in shape. The gym he went to was 20 km away.

  • When he was 13 years old he was admitted to the Tau Devi Lal Sports complex and he traveled 40 km everyday.

  • In the Under 16 National Junior Championships held in Lucknow in the year 2012, Neeraj Chopra achieved the gold medal by throwing 68.46 meters.

  • In the National Youth Championship, Neeraj Chopra had finished second in the year 2013 and after that he also made a position in the IAAF World Youth Championship.

  • Neeraj Chopra broke the age group record with a throw of 81.04m in the Inter University Championships. This competition was held in the year 2015.

  • Neeraj Chopra had set a new record in the Junior World Championships in the year 2016 by throwing 86.48 metres javelin and won the gold medal.

  • In the year 2016, Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in the first round of the South Asian Games by throwing a throw of 82.23 metres.

  • In the Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast in the year 2018, Neeraj Chopra won another gold medal by throwing 86.47 metres javelin.

  • In the year 2018 itself, Neeraj Chopra threw the 88.06m javelin in the Jakarta Asian Games and brought glory to India by winning the gold medal.

  • Neeraj Chopra is the first Indian javelin thrower to get gold medal in Asian Games. Apart from this, Neeraj Chopra is the second player to win gold medals in Asian Games and Commonwealth Games in the same year. Earlier in the year 1958, this record was set by Milkha Singh.

  • Neeraj worked with single-minded purpose for 10 years. He underwent a surgery for an elbow injury in 2019 – equivalent to Roger Federer fracturing his right wrist. But he took the best biomechanical treatment from an expert in Germany, Klaus Bartoneitz.

  • In 2021, in the Tokyo Olympics he made his place in the finals with the best javelin throw, winning the gold medal.

  • In June 2022, Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in Finland by throwing 86.69 metres.

  • Uwe Hohn, his German coach, is his greatest motivation and key behind his gold medal triumph. Uwe is himself an incredible champion with a record javelin throw of 104.8m. 

  • Just like many other sports celebrities in India Neeraj Chopra has now started investing in startups. Neeraj recently invested in a company that has recently raised approximately 7.4 crore INR from a group of investors. 'One Impression' the startup that works with Influencer marketing has attracted investors and celebrities like Neeraj Chopra, Varun Alagh, Anupam Mittal and stand up comedians, Zakir Khan and Kanan Gill.
