After doing a best performance article on Ian Chappell it’s only right that we do one for his brother Greg Chappell as well. The Indian fans may not have good memories and impression of him but that does not diminish as to how great of a batter he was and if I may say he was even better than his brother Ian Chappell. Greg Chappell played both Tests and ODIs in his career and he did very well in both and we will be talking about his records below. He played cricket for Australia from 1970-1984 which is a great 14 year career.


Greg Chappell played 87 Test Matches for Australia and he was very successful as a test match player as he scored a massive 7110 runs at a great average of 53.86 with 24 test hundreds and 4 Double Hundreds In test cricket. He also played 74 ODIs for Australia and scored 2331 runs at an average of 40.19 with 3 Hundreds in ODI cricket as well. So, let’s look at his Top 5 Best Performances.


247* vs New Zealand (1974)


We have talked about this match In the best Ian Chappell Performances as well where we mention that the Chappell brothers destroyed the New Zealand bowling attack and here we will talk about Greg Chappell who played the Innings of his life and did something that his brother could never do and that is Score a test double hundred. He stayed not out for the entire first innings and made 247* from only 356 balls with 30 fours and 1 six which means 126 runs in boundaries. It was a statement that Greg Chappell was one of the best in the world.

235 vs Pakistan (1980)


The second performance that we will talk about came against Pakistan in 1980 in Pakistan when Australia were batting first in the test match and Greg Chappell made a mockery of the great Pakistan bowling attack. He made 235 runs in just 363 at a great strike rate of 64.74 and he hit 21 fours in this innings. The match was a draw but this was one of the very best innings that Greg Chappell played in his career.

204 vs India (1981)


His third test double hundred and this innings was a one man show for Australia after they had bowled out India for just 201 and then in reply it was only Greg Chappell who stood firm and made a double hundred and 204 to be exact in just 296 balls with a strike rate of over 68 with 27 fours in the Innings. It was an exhibition of batsmanship of the highest order and he showed why he is the best batter in the Australian team at that time.

201 vs Pakistan (1981)


The year 1981 was very kind to Greg Chappell as he scored his second double hundred that year and his Fourth overall in test cricket and this one was again a brutal innings from him vs a great Pakistan bowling attack. Pakistan were batting first in this test match and they got bowled out for 291 and in reply Australia made 512 and Greg Chappell made 201 in this innings from 296 balls at a strike rate of 67.91. He liked playing aggressive cricket to put the opposition under pressure.

138* vs New Zealand (1980)


The best ODI innings that Greg Chappell played was this innings that he scored a brilliant 138* from just 109 balls where he bludgeoned the New Zealand bowling attack all around the SCG and he hit 10 fours and 1 six in this innings where Australia were batting first and they made 289 in 50 overs and New Zealand could only make 105 and Australia won the match by 94 runs and Greg Chappell was the man of the match for his incredible innings.
