When Chris Gayle smashed 37 runs in an over in the IPL

Chris Gayle was in a rampaging mood that day and the unfortunate bowler who got hit for 37 runs in one over was Prasanth Parmeswaran.

The year was 2011 and IPL was in its infancy stages and it needed a superstar to get to the next level and in 2011, RCB signed Chris Gayle and the rest as they say is history. Chris Gayle was signed by RCB after the auction took place and the impact he had in the first year was enough for the team management to say that he will be the star opener for RCB in the years to come. Chris Gayle smashed a century in his very first IPL match against KKR which was his previous team. One of the highlights of that season was the over which cost 37 runs. And Chris Gayle was in a mood that day.

Let’s look at that over that cost 37 runs and is the joint most expensive over in IPL history

When Chris Gayle went berserk

The match was between RCB and Kochi and the match was being played at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Chris Gayle was in a rampaging mood that day and the unfortunate bowler who got hit for 37 runs in one over was Prasanth Parmeswaran. He was bowling the 3rd  over of the match and what happened in that over, he will remember for the rest of his life. Chris Gayle was on strike and the first ball of the over went for a huge 6 over point and that pit the bowler under immense pressure. Then he bowled the second ball and it once again went for a big 6  and the worst part was that it was a no ball so 13 runs were made from just 1 ball and the writing was on the wall as to how the rest of the over was going to go.

The next ball was not a fast ball and Chris Gayle hit this ball hard for 4 runs towards mid wicket. Therefore 17 runs from 2 balls had already been made against Prasanth Parameswaran. He bowled the next ball and it was a good one but Chris Gayle hit it for 4 between Cover and Extra Cover even while there were 4 fielders on the off side. The next ball was hit for a huge 6 yet again and this match was being played under the go free initiative for RCB and he was clearing the ball to all parts. The fifth legal ball of the over also was hit for a massive 6 and this time it was hit over the side screen straight as an arrow. 33 runs had already been made and the last ball was left and the young left arm fast bowler was hoping for this nightmare to end as quickly as possible.

He ran and he bowled the 6th ball of the over and it was hit for a 4 and this was an inside edge and Gayle had earned this. The ball ran past the wicket keeper and thus came to an end one of the 2 most expensive overs in the history of the IPL. Chris Gayle stamped his authority and the young Prasanth Parmeswaran was never rarely seen after that pasting. Years later Ravindra Jadeja did the same to Harshal Patel when he smashed the best bowler in that IPL for 37 runs. RCB had to Chase down 126 to win in 20 overs in this match and they did in 13.1 overs with almost 7 overs to spare. Chris Gayle made 44 runs from 16 balls and he hit 3 fours and 5 sixes meaning 42 runs were made in boundaries.
