Lennart Skoglund is one of the greatest footballers to have come from Sweden, and he was a part of their golden generation that finished third in the 1950 FIFA World Cup and second in the 1958 FIFA World Cup.
During his early years, Skoglund's playing style was compared to Swedish greats like Sven Rydell and Henry "Garvis" Carlsson. What made him stood as a player was his exquisite ball-control, excellent left foot and fine distribution skills.
His transition from a young inside-left to a mature left winger was quite intriguing as well, and his outstanding dribbling skills was a treat to watch for any football fan at the time. The only criticism he received was for his selfish nature at times, while his shortcomings in terms of work rate and fitness were seen as weaknesses.
Skoglund began his club career with Swedish club Hammarby IF, but he spent the majority of his career at Italy. We will be looking back at the most memorable phase of his club career, which took place in Italy as well.
Let us rewind the Swedish maestro's time at Inter Milan.
Inter Milan Transfer: The Arrival of a Swedish Star
It was in the fall of 1950 that Inter Milan signed Skoglund from Swedish side AIK for a 12 million lire (6,860 pounds) transfer fee. The move was met with huge reaction from the fan base, with over 2000 Inter supporters greeting their new signing in October that year.
Skoglund's debut came against Sampdoria, which ended in a 5-1 win for Inter. Just a few weeks later, he had his first memorable moment for Inter with a brace against rivals AC Milan. The Swedish winger's contribution was immense, as Inter narrowly beat their rival's 3-2.
His first season ended with 12 goals in 29 appearances, as Inter finished a point behind their city rivals at the top of the table.
Serie A Glory: Inter Milan’s Title Winning Seasons
The Swede eventually established himself as a key player at Inter Milan, as the club went through a dominating period that saw win the 1952–53 and 1953–54 Serie A titles. Skoglund was especially vital in the 53-54 campaign, which saw him record a hat-trick of assists in Inter's crucial victory against Milan.
He established a solid partnership with Benito Lorenzi and Faas Wilkes during this golden run. Inter's manager Alfredo Foni, who was appointed in 1952, played a highly defensive system in which the Swede was an essential part of the team's attacking force from the left wing.
Foni departed the Nerazzurri when the 1954-55 season concluded, as Inter finished 8th in the league. The years that followed were difficult for both Skoglund and Inter, who failed to replicate their past success.
Inter Milan was also bought by Italian oil tycoon Angelo Moratti in late 1955, who made seven managerial changes during the first three years of his presidency. It was a period of inconsistency that failed to produce any sort of challenge in Serie A.
Skoglund enjoyed a revival at Inter Milan during his later years at the club, and was of the fan favorites at the time. In his 9 years at Inter, the Swede made over 246 competitive appearances and scored 57 goals.
Final Years and Departure from Inter
He left Inter for Sampdoria during the summer of 1959, even though he was reluctant to bid farewell to the Nerazzurri.
Skoglund's time at Inter Milan might not be the finest in terms of silverware, especially compared to what other Inter greats went on to win with the club. However, he was a magnificent star that stood with them during their toughest times. The Swede will always be regarded as one of their very finest in history.
