Stefan Effenberg was a former German midfielder, mostly known for his time at Bayern Munich. He had 2 separate stints with the Bavarians, one during the early 90's and the other being towards the decade end. Effenberg's passing range, shooting ability, physical strength, and leadership skills were his key attributes that made him a top player of the time. Despite his excellence as a player, his career was also in the spotlight due to his temperamental and controversial character. Club career
Stefan Effenberg began his professional football career at Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he became an undisputed starter of the first-team at age 20. The player's promising potential at such a young age sparked interest from German giants Bayern, who eventually signed the player in 1990
.
Despite the arrival of Effenberg, Bayern were unable to win any silverware at the time. Bayern responded to the poor on-field performance by signing their old player Lothar Matthäus from Milan. The second coming of Matthäus led to Effenberg jumping ship to Italy, as he signed for Fiorentina.
Even though Fiorentina had several talented players like Effenberg, Brian Laudrup, Gabriel Batistuta, they ended up being relegated from the Italian first-division. The club were however able to achieve promotion in the following season and return to Serie A.
The year of 1994 saw the second coming of Effenberg to Gladbach. His second stint at the club saw him make over 118 league appearances and score 23 goals.
In a move that made his career cycle repeat all over again, as Stefan Effenberg was re-signed by Bayern from Gladbach in 1998. Unlike the first stint, Effenberg's return to Bayern was much more successful.
Effenberg won three Bundesliga titles in a row with Bayern, and the club's domestic domination at the time saw him also clinch the DFB-Pokal, DFB-Ligapokal, and DFL-Supercup.
The Bavarians were one of the best teams in world football at the time, and Effenberg's second coming saw him reach 2 Champions League finals.The first of those was the legendary 1999 Champions League final against Manchester United, which saw the latter make a miraculous comeback to win the treble.
Bayern responded to this heartbreak in the best possible way, as they were back in another European Cup final 2 years later. Effenberg was their captain as well this time. Der Tiger was instrumental in the final vs Valencia, as he scored the equalizing penalty to make the match finish 1-1 by normal time. This eventually led to a penalty-shootout after extra-time, where Bayern finally emerged victorious and became the Champions of Europe.
It was an unforgettable moment for Effenberg as well, who established himself as a Bayern legend that night. His magnificent performance in the tournament also saw him named the Most Valuable Player of the 2000–01 UEFA Champions League.
Stefan Effenberg's homecoming to Bayern was nothing less than a magnificent success , which ended with the player winning a total of 10 titles in just 4 years. He left the club yet again in 2002, making 95 appearances and scoring 16 goals in his second run at the club.
This was followed by short stints at VfL Wolfsburg and Al-Arabi, before announcing his retirement from football.
Stefan Effenberg bid farewell to football not only as an all-time Bayern great, but as one of the most aggressive players in Bundesliga history. Der Tiger collected 109 yellow cards during his entire career, which was an all-time record at the time of his retirement.
It was this unique character and his brilliance as a player that'll always make him a memorable name in football.
