Top 5 Best Dilip Vengsarkar batting Performances

Dilip Vengsarkar was one of the main pillars of India winning the 1983 World Cup as he provided stability to the batting order. Here we look at the best innings of his cricket career.

After talking about a few all rounders it is now time to shift our focus back to the great batters of Indian cricket history and someone who has played over 115 Test matches and he is an idol for a lot of young players in the team after him and even now as well based on the performances he has given for Indian team especially in test cricket which is the hardest format of the game. He had a good habit of scoring Centuries and guiding India to a win or save a test match. He also became the chairman of the selection committee later on and he was the one who saw the talent of Virat Kohli and recommended him to the Indian team.

Dilip Vengsarkar was one of the main pillars of India winning the 1983 World Cup as he provided stability to the batting order and he got runs as well. Dilip Vengsarkar scored over 6600 Test runs for India in his career with 16 hundreds in his Kitty. Let’s look at the Top 5 Best Dilip Vengsarkar batting Performances.

166 vs Sri Lanka (1987)

The highest test score by the great Dilip Vengsarkar was this 166 that he hit against Sri Lanka in 1987. In this test match India were batting first and Dilip Vengsarkar came into bat at number 4 with India needing a big innings to post a big first innings total and that is what exactly Dilip Vengsarkar did in this innings. He expertly  took apart the Sri Lankan bowling attack and scored runs all the ground and in the process scored a magnificent hundred for his country in tough circumstances and that is what champions do which is they stand up when the time is the most difficult.

164* vs Australia (1986)

This was an innings which still is very special to Dilip Vengsarkar because this came against one of the best sides in the world and the Aussies had a great bowling attack as well. In this test match it was Australia who were batting first and they posted a decent score of 345 in the first innings but then India started the reply and as always it was the great Sunil Gavaskar who set the tone with yet another hundred but the main star of the innings was about to come at number 5 and when he arrived he got into the act straight away and started hitting fours and keeping the scoreboard ticking and he played so well that no bowler could get him out and he went not out .

157 vs England (1982)

After talking about 2 Hundreds which came in home conditions it is now time to talk about one of his best overseas innings and this came at the Home Of Cricket which is Lord’s and he is one of the rare Indian batters who have their name in the honors board there. This innings came under the most pressure circumstances when India was under the pump as they got out cheaply replying to the first innings by England and they enforced the follow on but then started the Dilip Vengsarkar show and everyone was left awestruck at the sheer class of this batter from India and he scored quicker than he usually does and with the help of 21 fours he made an incredible 157 runs but unfortunately India post this test match.

157* vs West Indies (1978)

This was a very young Dilip Vengsarkar and he was facing probably the best cricket team ever assembled and imagine the pressure on this young man that he went out to bat in front of 100,000 fans at the Eden Gardens that day and showed everyone why he was the future of batting. This Innings also came in the second innings batting for India. The match was evenly poised but Sunil Gavaskar and Dilip Vengsarkar batted so well that they took the match away from West Indies ,they had an amazing partnership of 344 runs where Sunil Gavaskar made 182 not out and Dilip Vengsarkar made 157* and it was full of joy for all those fans who went to see these two bats.

88* vs England (1981)

There are a few ODI innings in the career of Dilip Vengsarkar that are more high scoring than this one but I chose this one because in this match it was Dilip Vengsarkar who single handedly ensured that India wins the match vs a very good England team and even though India were chasing 162, the team came in a spot of bother but Dilip Vengsarkar kept his cool and made a match winning 88* in just 107 balls and won the match for India. It takes a special effort for just one player to win the match for his nation.
