It was the first ever Test Match to have ever been played and it was between England vs Australia. It was held in 1877 in the month of March so it will almost be 147 years since that landmark game of cricket. In this test match, Australia were batting first and if there was a one man show then this was the one because out of the 245 runs that Australia made in the first innings, 165 of them were made by one batter. There have been very few instances in the 147 year history of Test Cricket where this has happened. Charles Bannerman was the batter who hit 165 runs and he became the first centurion in the history of Test Cricket. England did not have a big total to get past

In the first batting innings for England, a few batters got starts but no one was able to convert it into a big score. The only batter who showed any fight was the opening batter Henry Jupp who made a valuable 65 runs from 241 balls in which he hit just the 2 fours. The other batters were not able to provide support. It was William Midwinter who did most of the Damage as he took 5 wickets in this innings. He bowled a massive 54 overs in this innings out of which 23 overs were maidens. He gave away only 78 runs and he took 5 Wickets would become the first 5 Wicket Haul in the history of Test Cricket. This was a special spell of bowling and it showed that spin bowlers were important in Test Cricket.

Then in the second innings Australia batted poorly and they made only 104 runs and the first Five Wicket Haul by an England bowler was also accomplished as Alfred Shaw took 5 Wickets for 38 runs while bowling 34 overs out of which 16 overs were maidens. The target for England was 154 and it was not a big total. In this innings the first 7 Wicket Haul in test cricket history was also reached as Thomas Kendall took 7 wickets for 55 runs in the 33 overs that he bowled. Australia won this low scoring match by 45 runs and the future of Test Cricket was bright. In the first test match ever played William Midwinter created history and his name will always be mentioned.
