You can ask any Manchester United to name a Norwegian footballer that played for their club, and the majority would undoubtedly answer Ole Gunnar Solskjær. His stint as Manchester United manager made him a familiar name with the modern fans of the club, while his magnificent heroics in the 1999 Champions League final makes him a living legend for hardcore United fans.
While Solskjær has undoubtedly cemented himself as arguably the greatest Norwegian to have played for the Red Devils, this article will be looking back at the career of yet another Norwegian who succeeded at Old Trafford.
We will be looking back at the career of Norwegian defender Henning Berg in this article, who used to hold the record of winning the Premier League with 2 different clubs. Let us now rewind back the years to his footballing days.
Blackburn move and league title glory
Henning Berg's early years as a footballer saw him play for the likes of Vålerenga and Lillestrøm before ultimately making the move to England.
It was during a match between England and Norway on 14th November 1992 that Blackburn manager Kenny Dalglish had arrived to scout Norwegian defender Tore Pedersen, but the latter ended up getting injured during the match. This led to Pedersen being replaced by Berg, who went on to impress Dalglish immensely. The turn of events ultimately resulted in Berg being offered a contract by Dalglish, and the Norwegian was eventually signed by Blackburn Rovers for a £400,000 transfer fee from Lillestrøm.
Berg made his first appearance for Blackburn on 2nd February 1993, as he came on from the bench in their 2-1 lose against Crystal Palace. Despite this bittersweet moment, The Norwegian eventually made the right-back position his own and became an instrumental part of Dalglish's Blackburn side.
History was ultimately made by Dalglish and his men, as Blackburn achieved the heroic feat of becoming Premier League Champions. Berg was a significant contributor to the eternal achievement, as he was a constant quality performer throughout the season and only missed 2 games that campaign. The Norwegian's ability to also operate as a centre-back made him a top player for the Rovers.
United come calling
Berg's excellent display at Blackburn caught the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson, who ironically was interested in signing the player 9 years earlier when he was a teenager. That transfer however couldn't materialize due to the inability to obtain a work permit.
There were no such obstacles this time around, and much convincing wasn't needed to attract Berg who had been a childhood Manchester United fan. A record £5 million transfer fee was paid in 1997 to Blackburn, which was the joint-highest fee ever paid by a British club for a defender back then.
The Norwegian defender was a constant name in Ferguson's United side during the 1997–98 season, but the arrival of Jaap Stamm in July 1998 was the beginning of the end for Berg.
Berg's minutes at United were drastically less in the following 1998-99 season, which saw him finish the season with just 16 Premier appearances.
Despite these disappointments, he was still able to become a part of the legendary United side that went on to win the treble in 1999. Although Berg was extremely unfortunate to miss the 1999 FA Cup Final and 1999 UEFA Champions League Final, he still obtained a winner's medal in both competitions for his earlier participations during the season.
The league title victory with United also made Berg the first ever player to lift the Premier League title with 2 different sides, a record that solely belonged to him until 2010.
Berg eventually retained his place in United's starting lineup as well in the 1999–2000 season, as his teammate Ronny Johnsen was injured.
That was also his final season with the Red Devils, as he returned to Blackburn on a loan move that was eventually made permanent. His homecoming stint with the Rovers saw him add a Football League Cup to his trophy cabinet as well.
Berg's time at United might not have been the most successful, but his short stint at United is still seen by many to be one the finest by a foreign player in the club's history.
