The Spanish term "remontada" Means comeback, and Real Madrid have been the masters of it. Throughout their history, Los Blanco have defied the odds and shocked the world with numerous comebacks.


Juanito was a legendary Real Madrid forward known for embodying the club’s famous “remontada” spirit. A key figure in the 1980s, he played a crucial role in multiple comebacks and won several trophies before his tragic death in 1992 at the age of 37.


During the 80's era, Spanish forward Juanito was the heartbeat of Real's comeback triumphs at the time. He was a fan favorite at the time, as Madrid supporters saw him as a symbol of their "never give up" attitude. Juanito played his entire career in Spain, and ironically came through Atletico Madrid's youth academy.


He was an excellent dribbler of the ball as well, and the player's only negative aspect was his constant short-tempered attitude. This led to the player receiving several suspensions during his years at Madrid.

Juanito Before Real Madrid: Early Life and Atlético Setback


A young Juanito began his football journey with local club Fuengirola, followed by a switch to Atlético Madrid's youth academy. His time at Atlético was a mixed one both on and off the field. The underage Spaniard allegedly forged his papers so he could play for their under-18 team. He then went on to score a brace in his debut, but a fractured tibia ended his career at Atlético and he never played for the senior side.


Those obstacles did not deter Juanito though, as he revived his career at Burgos, helping them to win the Segunda División in 1975–76. This was followed by his La Liga debut in a 2–1 win over Español in the following season, and

He was eventually awarded Spanish Footballer of the Year by Don Balón.


Juanito at Real Madrid: The Birth of a Remontada Legend


Juanito's goalscoring exploits caught the attention of Real Madrid, who signed him in June 1977. It was a dream come true for the player, who had been a Real Madrid fan since his adulthood. Juanito's time at Madrid was a massive success in terms of silverware, as he won five league titles, two Copa del Rey and two UEFA Cups. One of his finest individual moments came in the 1980 Copa del Rey final, which saw him score a brace in Madrid's 6-1 thrashing of Castilla. Another highlight moment for Juanito was scoring a penalty in the 1982–83 European Cup Winners' Cup final for Madrid, but his efforts went in vain as Aberdeen beat Madrid 2-1.The 1983–84 La Liga campaign was another golden moment for the player, which ended with Juanito winning the Pichichi Trophy. He finished that season as joint top scorer with 17 goals.


In total, Juanito spent over 13 seasons with Los Blancos and scored 85 goals in 284 appearances.


Life After Madrid and Coaching Career


After a decade at Real Madrid, Juanito spent 2 years at Malaga. He helped them achieve their first promotion from the second tier in his first year, as champions. This was followed by a short stint at Los Boliches, after which he retired as a player


Juanito later became a manager for Spanish side Mérida, where he lead them to a seventh place in division two in 1991–92.


Juanito’s Tragic Death and Lasting Legacy at Real Madrid


On 2nd April 1992, after watching Real play Torino in a UEFA Cup match, he was killed in a road accident in Calzada de Oropesa, Toledo, while returning to Mérida. Football lost one of its precious diamonds at age 37.


The legacy of Juanito lives on, and he continues to be remembered in the seventh minute of every Real Madrid home game, as the Ultras chant "Illa illa illa, Juanito maravilla" As a tribute to their legendary player.
