When Aaron Finch hit the highest individual T20 international score of 172

In this article, let’s look back at the record breaking innings of 172 by Aaron Finch, which is also the highest individual score in T20Is.

Aaron Finch has the record of hitting the 2 highest scores by an individual batter in the history of T20 international cricket. He first hit a brilliant 156 and it was thought that no other batter in the international cricket world would be able to hit that many. However after a few years it was Aaron Finch only that smashed 172 runs against Zimbabwe. This for sure is not being broken anytime soon.

Let’s talk about this record breaking innings by Aaron Finch

Highest Individual Score in T20I: Aaron Finch 172 vs Zimbabwe

Firstly let’s talk about the fact that a batter smashed 172 in a T20 international. This match was of 20 overs and Aaron Finch was just 28 runs from a double hundred. He was one of the most destructive batters in the history of the t20i format. No other batter has made such big daddy hundreds in this format. This was a match against Zimbabwe and it was in the year 2018. There was fear around the name Aaron Finch but what he did in this match was something that shocked everyone.

Australia were batting first and they made 229 in total. Out of which 172 were made by one batter. That is simply sensational. He played for 76 balls in this innings and he absolutely decimated the Zimbabwe bowlers to all parts in Harare. He hit 16 fours and 10 huge sixes in this innings which means a total of 124 runs in boundaries. There are batters who are more than 95% of the total players who have played T20I cricket and have not made 124 runs in the full innings. Such was the dominance of this man. He had a strike rate of 226.32 in this once in a lifetime innings.

Aaron Finch showed the world that day that it is possible to smash such big scores in T20I Cricket but the secret is to play the full 20 overs and have as much of the strike as possible. In the balls that a batter faces he should make the most of it. He hit 26 balls out of his 76 balls for boundaries which is more than one third. In the other 50 balls he ran ones and twos. There was no answer from the bowlers and the total was so big that they were out of the match even before the second innings began. Zimbabwe could only make 129 from their 20 overs which meant that they lost the match to Australia by 100 runs but they also lost the match to Aaron Finch by 43 runs. One man can win a match but it is a rare occurrence.
