Her parents were not of the same thinking as they wanted Sakshi to do whatever she wanted and they supported her. Sakshi Malik started wrestling training at the age of 12 under Ishwar Dahiya at Chhotu Ram Stadium in Rohtak. Sakshi Malik was doing a lot of things at once. She was focusing on her wrestling training as well as her studies and she wanted to get a job with the Indian Railways. Sakshi Malik was having to wrestle boys when she was younger as there were not a lot of girls at the time. Sakshi Malik improved her quickness in the mat and locals were mean to Sakshi sometimes but her resolve to do something for India kept her going.

The Fight for Women’s Wrestling In India

In the month of January 2023, Sakshi Malik along with her compatriots Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia took to the streets. This was a very unfortunate turn of events. They were protesting against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and they accused him of sexually exploiting women’s wrestlers especially those who do not have the name that some of the Olympics stars have. The wrestlers wanted the Prime Minister and Home Minister to intervene but an oversight committee was formed and the protest was called off for the time being.

However on 23rd April, the wrestlers resumed their protest after a number of women were trying to get a police complaint done against the man but the police were not registering an FIR. It was saddening that the Government did not do any substance In this situation and the Supreme Court of India had to intervene and then two FIRs were lodged in the POCSO Act. As a result of all the pressure he had to resign as the President of the Wrestling Federation of India and his MP seat was also taken from him. Currently there is no protest and everything looks to have gone back to normal.
