This is the second of the articles that we are doing about the stats Comparison between two all time greats and this time we will have a look at 2 of the best left handed wicket keepers of all time and these 2 are also the perfect role models for all the young players as to how to play the sport. Kumar Sangakkara and Adam Gilchrist are two of my favorite left handed batters and the runs they have scored for their nations is incredible.


Before we talk about the stats about these 2 all time greats , I want to say that this has been so much fun to do and I look forward to doing more such articles in the future. Kumar Sangakkara and Adam Gilchrist played in that era when there were great bowlers in all the teams and yet they stood out from the rest. So, let’s look at the stats of these 2 and compare.


Adam Gilchrist


We talked about Adam Gilchrist in a previous article as well but it will not be enough in just 1 article to talk about all his stats because Australia has not had a keeper like him since the time he left and his impact is still felt . Let’s have a look at his stats.


Test Cricket


Adam Gilchrist was one of those test wicket keeper batters that changed the way batters should bat in the longest format of the game. He played 96 Test Matches for Australia and he scored 5570 runs at an average of 47.60 and he also made 17 Test hundreds. As a wicket keeper he took 379 Catches and he also did 37 Stumpings.

ODI Cricket


In the ODI format he was ruthless as well as he played 287 matches for Australia and he made 9619 runs in ODIs with 16 ODI hundreds as well and as a wicket keeper he took 417 catches and did 55 Stumpings. The number of Catches that he took is staggering and I think only a few have come close to him.

Kumar Sangakkara


Now we will talk about the greatest wicket keeper batter that Sri Lanka has ever seen and he is Kumar Sangakkara. He is an all time legend and his stats are simply sensational. So, let’s have a look at them.


Test Cricket


Kumar Sangakkara played 134 Test Matches in his career and he made a mammoth 12400 runs at an average of 57.40 and he made 38 Test hundreds in his career. He was one of the best ever. As a wicket keeper he took 182 catches and did a total of 20 Stunpings in his test career.

ODI Cricket


The story is similar in ODIs when it comes to batting as in the 404 ODIs that he played for Sri Lanka he made a whopping 14234 runs at an average of 41.98 and he made 25 Hundreds in ODI Cricket as well. As a wicket keeper he took 402 catches and did 99 Stumpings in his career.


Adam Gilchrist vs Kumar Sangakkara Stats Comparison


As a batter there is simply no comparison because Kumar Sangakkara is far and beyond the better one as he has made over 12000 runs in both the formats and Adam Gilchrist has not even made 10000 runs in either. As a wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist takes the lead in test cricket but in ODI Cricket it is even as far as the Catches go but in Stumpings Kumar Sangakkara is ahead by a margin vs Adam Gilchrist.
