Manish Pandey gets in the IPL record books

The IPL was in its second season and it had become a big hit but in 2008, all the centuries were made by overseas players starting with Brendon McCullum. The year was 2009 and the IPL was played in South Africa and it was the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Deccan Chargers and it was on 21st May at Super Sport Park in Centurion. RCB were batting first In that match and Manish Pandey was opening the Innings for RCB. RCB made 170 in their 20 overs and out of that 114 not out was made by Manish Pandey. Manish Pandey was determined to make history that day.

He batted for 73 balls in this historic innings and he was not out till the very end. He smashed 10 fours and 4 sixes meaning he hit 64 runs out of 114 runs in boundaries. Manish Pandey was the sole man shown as the other batters were a no show. The likes of Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli and Jacques Kallis did not bat well. He was batting at a strike rate of 156 on a pitch which was tricky for batting. At that time Manish Pandey was one of the rising stars of Indian batting and he showed what he can do in this match. Deccan Chargers bag a target of 171 and the experienced attack of RCB which included Anil Kumble, Jacques Kallis, Praveen Kumar were able to restrict Deccan Chargers to 158 and as a result RCB won this match by 12 runs.

It was on this day in 2009 that Manish Pandey became one of the biggest stars in India as the whole world saw him bat with all that style and swagger and his timing and his big sixes were a treat for the fans. Manish Pandey would play his most impactful IPL innings in the 2014 IPL Final where he hit 94 runs as KKR chased down a score of 200 in 20 overs and recently KKR have again brought back Manish Pandey in the team with the hope of similar performances in IPL 2024. Thay 114* will always be in the record books and so will Manish Pandey.
